Are Light Weights Better Than Heavy Weights For Muscle Toning
If I take heavy weights I’ll bulk up and I don’t want that, I’d rather take lighter weights and do more reps I only want to tone. That’s the first impression of a first time gymmer.
As a fitness trainer let me tell you one thing. Both of the above have their benefits. Let’s understand how each activity is beneficial.
The debate here is between muscular strength and muscular endurance. Blah blah blah!!! Yea jargons again.. Let’s understand what each of them mean first, in simple English. Muscular Strength is basically how much you can carry and Muscular Endurance is how long can you do an activity without getting muscle fatigue so in simpler words lifting a 50kg goni of aata (sack of flour) for 5 counts is muscular strength and lifting 5kg goni of aata for 50 counts is muscular endurance.
How is having more muscular strength beneficial to us women? We don’t really carry a 50 kg load everyday right? Well, honestly, neither does a man. But, when you train with heavy weights in a gym with short reps what happens scientifically inside your body is this. Your muscle fibres undergo wear and tear and in between reps or post workout the muscle fibres rebuild to what we call “bulky muscle” or rather a stronger muscle. Why do we need a stronger muscle in day to day activity? Besides showing off your biceps to your friends. Our body while at rest also burns certain amount of calories right? Also known as the Basal Metabolic Rate of your body. So, if you have more muscle over fat your BMR is higher, because muscle uses more calories at rest over fat, which is a sign of a healthy body.
Now let’s figure out the other aspect, which is muscular endurance. This basically represents your fatigue factor. Some people can go on and on lifting and carrying weights without feeling muscular pain. Let’s take for example our day to day activities, which on a regular basis has some amount of walking, climbing stairs, lifting objects, carrying babies. My observation these days is that people fatigue out very soon, by the end of the day they have no energy and all they keep saying, is I’m tired. All the time. With greater muscular endurance these everyday tasks will be easy and moreover you will still feel refreshed at the end of the day.
So if you ask me. For women, i would say muscular endurance is very important. But on the other hand it goes hand in hand with muscular strength.
